Parents and caregivers can’t always know what to expect from their children. But thanks to a terrific video called “1, 2, 3 Grow,” they can learn more early childhood’s milestones.
The video features doctors and parents discussing milestones in four areas: movement, social relationships, communication, and thinking.
The goal is to give parents and caregivers a sense of what to expect – and what to ask pediatricians about – as their children grow.
The videos were produced by University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center and by members of the Massachusetts Act Early state team.
“The 1, 2, 3 Grow Project was developed in recognition of the cultural and linguistic disparities that exist for many families in accessing information about healthy development and signs of developmental concerns in young children,” Elaine M. Gabovitch explains. She used to work at the Shriver Center. Now she’s the director of the Division for Children & Youth with Special Health Needs at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Versions of the video are available in seven languages — English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Haitian-Creole, Portuguese, and Vietnamese. And there is an eighth video, recorded in English, that focuses on the concerns of African-American families.
UMass Medical’s website also has links to a milestones brochure and a milestones checklist. Both are also available in all seven languages.
“The series has been picked up far and wide both in the U.S. and overseas. We hope that families find this information to be useful. This was truly a labor of love by our talented development team,” Gabovitch adds.
“We want as many families as possible to benefit from this resource.”
