Why change an organization’s name?
To better share its impact.
That’s why the Parent-Child Home Program has changed its name to ParentChild+.
“People often focused on only one aspect of what we do, early literacy. But our staff, participating families, and program communities know we are so much more,” Sarah Walzer, CEO of ParentChild,+ says of the name change, which was made in April.
The bigger picture is that the organization “uses education to break the cycle of poverty for low-income families. We engage early in life and help toddlers, their parents, and their family child care providers access a path to possibility,” according to its website.
Walzer notes, “Our wonderful network of partners across the country and around the world have engaged with tens of thousands of children and families, working together to transform their lives.”
Much of this work is done through extensive home visits. The home visitor brings books and toys and shares a love of learning.
There’s also a family child care model that helps family child care providers develop more skills, resources, and expertise.
“We needed to expand our story, so everyone would know how uniquely effective this program is, how what we provide does not stop at early literacy,” Walser says. “We are providing early opportunity. We are building parent-child attachment, school readiness, and school success for America’s overlooked and underserved families. We are doing it every day of the year, in America’s most neglected and under-funded neighborhoods. And we are doing it with deep community knowledge, a welcoming smile, with joy and with passion for children and families, in over 50 languages.”
Along with the name change, the organization has revamped its website, and it has a very active Twitter feed.
Helping families and sharing information are all part of the work, Walser says, of “ensuring that all of our children will have equal possibilities from the start.”
