I am looking for a chart that might have in one column the characteristics of each developmental stage in literacy and in a corresponding column, teaching practices to support each stage. Does anyone have something like this?

Thank you,

So many early learning programs have subjected themselves to promoting "academics" over play, without recognizing the consequences. If we could only get educators, policy makers and parents to understand all of the learning that occurs during children's play, we'd all be better off. And, we'd be teaching children the 21st century skills that are the "buzz" in the academic community right now. How else do children learn self-regulation, problem solving, and organization skills? Play gives children the opportunity to negotiate, make up rules and consequences, and take on the perspective others.

Hooray for blocks! Block play encourages development in so many areas, problem solving, spatial relationships, social engagement, creativity, math, science, social studies, the list goes on.
The list of all the things you'd do leaves out an important one. You'd make sure that children in homes that speak languages other than English are
speaking their home language well, and you'd make sure they spend time with English speaking children. You'd know that bilingual children will succeed better in reading and math. If children had been in this country less than three years, you would not test them in English. You'd test them in their spoken language. You wouldn't expect them to learn English in less than three years. But you'd test them in ways that allow them to show what they know and can do.
